Telluride's population surges as thousands of fans flock to an exquisitely eclectic weekend of acoustic music. The festival's original focus was on bluegrass, as its name implies, but it now encompasses folk, country, gospel, and roots music from around the planet. Still, there's no shortage of pickin' and grinnin' among the 30 or so acts.
The town and festival are expensive (a four-day pass is $135 at the gate), but camping makes the trip more affordable. The setting is unbeatable: Set in a box canyon in the craggy San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado, Telluride is surrounded by rocky peaks on three sides. The mountains prove irresistible to the many visitors who sneak in a hike or mountain-bike ride between concerts.
Telluride's small-town vibes somehow manage to survive the crowds. Friendly locals greet visitors coming into town and answer questions about where to go and what to do. Booths offer food, political information, and crafts; while musical workshops and children's areas round out the festival's offerings.
